Greetings, people of the internet!
My name is Rebecca, but close friends call me Bex, and I like books.
I enjoy reading very, very much. My tastes cover two main categories: classic literature and young adult fiction. I am an English major and I genuinely enjoy classic literature, everything from Homer to Shakespeare to Jane Austen, and plenty of less famous, equally enjoyable classic authors. I am also hard core into YA fiction, especially anything paranormal, supernatural, folkloric or mythological. Dystopian novels are not really my thing, though there are exceptions, and neither are contemporary works. I don't want to read about issues like bullying or drugs or abuse...I want vampires and faeries and adventure! There are a few contemporary books that are simply to die for though, and are simply phenomenal enough that I have to read them despite my preference for fantasy.
I also need romance in my novels. I generally look for books where the heroine is a girl, and there is love in the air. I have been known to look in the back of books in the store to see if she ends up with anyone, and, if the romance isn't a strong enough presence, I pass. I do like a good story, too, though...nothing like saving the world (and/or your loved ones), but I need a least a little love in my books.
I don't read books for grown-ups. (Yes, I'm in college, however, I am a child at heart and no one can take that away from me.) They're all about sex or suffering or desperation or shattered dreams and I simply cannot bear it. Even fantasy is too harsh for me. (By "harsh" I do not mean violent, I watch HBO's Game of Thrones, so it's not like I have an opposition to sex and violence, I just can't stand the lack of magic/wonder/true love in books meant for adults.) YA forever! Wooo!
Apart from books, I'm also obsessed with Disney princess movies (the old ones, as in pre-90s, though I do love The Little Mermaid, and the very new ones, like Frozen, which is my life right now), musicals (like Les Miserables (2012) and Mamma Mia (2008)), and CW television shows (like The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Reign, and Supernatural).
I'm also partial to clothes and jewelry (lacy, flowery, feminine, girly stuff; you won't catch me outside the house without heels), as well as using natural, chemical-free beauty and personal care products (honey and coconut oil are my staples). I consider myself an old-fashioned person, I guess. I'd do almost anything to live in a past historical era, instead of this technological one, devoid of mystery, adventure, or true human connection. I am incredibly interested in folklore and mythology as well, so look forward to posts on books of that nature!
In real life, I'm scared of most things, like having to call customer service, return something, or maintain sustained interactions with people not in my group of five favorite people. However, I like to believe that if I was presented with an opportunity for a real life, the life one of my book heroines would have, I would take it. That's another thing: my fictional worlds and the people in them are far more real and far more important to me than any in the physical world.
I've never been in a relationship, and I don't think I ever will be. No real life guy could ever be what guys in books are, and I could never be like the girls in them for him, which is what he would deserve. I guess I just don't see the point in struggling (because of my shyness) to form a connection to someone, when I would be always comparing that relationship to those of my favorite characters, and it would always fail. I believe in love in real life, I do, for some people, but not for me. I used to believe I could find what my book heroines had, but then I got to college and had the worst experience with a guy in my whole life, and that illusion was shattered. I could never, ever, ever trust that a real life guy could ever feel real, true love for me in the way that I would need him to in order to believe it.
I also enjoy tea, and drink approximately four to five cups a day. My absolute favorite is Twinings Earl Grey, but I'm also partial to their English Breakfast, Irish Breakfast, Prince of Wales, and Lady Grey. (Basically, I like black tea, and take it straight, though occasionally with milk.)
